Goalball Cup 2010-2011

This season’s (2010-2011) National Goalball Cup (certainly the biggest goalball tournament in the UK) was held in June at the English Institute of Sports In Sheffield. At the competition, four of the best teams in the UK were brought together to contest the most prestigious goalball cup of the season. Teams entered included: London Sports, Thames Valley, Vista and Rochdale.

The tournament was competed using a straight Round-Robin system. In the first game of the day, Thames Valley succeeded to defeat a resisting Vista team but eventually winning confortablely. The subsequent game saw London Sports mercying the Rochdale team. After London Sports’ victorious game, Vista managed to beat ROchdale and London Sports defeating Vista.

As the tournament gathered pace and reached its climactic moments, the final game of the tournament, and indeed according to the points gained by both teams, the final of the tournament; the match saw London Sports, the two years ago National Goalball Cup winners with 9 points, go head to head with the last year’s winners Thames Valley also with 9 points.

The final proved to be an exciting and much contested match for the spectators with incredible show of sheer determination, competitiveness and skills from both teams. As the mayor of Sheffield looked on, Thames Valley, of whose players 4 are members of the Great Britain Squad, finished the first half winning 2-1. However, in the second half London Sports found their right gear, increased the intensity of the play and with a magnificent display of both defence and offence succeeded to crush Thames Valley in the second half 4-1 and winning the match by the score-line of 5-3. Thus london sport won the british goalball cup for the fourth time in row;

It was truly a huge successful tournament for London Sports team, whose players all performed incredibly on the biggest stage of goalball in the Uk and their hard-work and immense dedication finally paid off. The victorious team immediately returned to the capital and is now training hard as ever and building towards Holland Marithan Goalball Tournament held between 7-10 October of this year.
